“Insider’s Japan” started in Tokyo with its 21st century orientation alongside its iconic traditional-historic and spiritual sites. We quickly left the 21st century and headed into the traditional Japan of Hakone—experiencing the older Ryokan Inn, complete with a multi-course Kaiseki dinner. Takayama and Kanasawa, both untouched by WWII bombing, provided a look at medieval neighborhoods and older gardens. Hands on experiences such as a cooking class, applying gold leaf, and an abbreviated tea ceremony were highlights. Kyoto rounded out the look at Japan with its well-preserved cultural sites, including the famous Golden and Silver Pavilions.
